The former Valentino visionary steps into a new chapter, bringing drama, color, and storytelling to the legendary fashion house.

Balenciaga is turning a stylish new page. Following Demna’s departure earlier this year, the fashion house has officially named Pierpaolo Piccioli as its new creative director—an appointment signaling both a fresh start and a return to couture-driven storytelling.

Francesca Bellettini, Deputy CEO of Kering, shared her enthusiasm: “Pierpaolo is one of the most celebrated designers of our time. His vision, craftsmanship, and deep appreciation for haute couture make him the ideal force to carry Balenciaga into its next era.”

Piccioli is no stranger to the world of high fashion. His two-decade journey at Valentino—from accessory designer in 1999 to sole creative director by 2016—was marked by bold innovation and emotional elegance. His daring color palettes (like the unforgettable all-pink Fall 2022 collection), modern silhouettes, and a fresh take on red carpet dressing earned him the devotion of stars like Zendaya, Rihanna, and Anne Hathaway.

Though he once dreamt of directing films, Piccioli found his narrative power in fashion. Trained at the Istituto Europeo di Design in Rome and refined at Fendi’s accessory department, he merged his artistic soul with his love for detail, earning a reputation for turning clothing into a canvas for powerful stories.

In his statement, Piccioli acknowledged the legacy he inherits:

“What I am receiving is a brand full of possibilities that is incredibly fascinating. I must first and foremost thank Demna; I’ve always admired his talent and vision. I couldn’t ask for a better passing of the torch. This gives me the chance to shape a new version of the Maison, adding another chapter with a new story”

Demna will present his final Balenciaga couture collection on July 10, with subtle nods already made to his upcoming journey at Gucci. Piccioli will assume full creative leadership immediately after, with his highly anticipated debut collection set for October.

As the fashion world braces for this bold transition, one thing is clear: Balenciaga’s next era, guided by Piccioli’s poetic vision, promises drama, innovation, and reinvention.
