Adam Lambert is stepping back into the spotlight this summer with a role that promises to stir both souls and headlines. The Grammy-nominated vocalist, who dazzled Broadway audiences last year in Cabaret, will take on Judas in a highly anticipated production of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl—one of L.A.’s most iconic stages. Lambert will be joined by Cynthia Erivo, the Tony- and Grammy-winning Wicked star, who takes on the groundbreaking role of Jesus in a gender-flipped casting move that brings sharp modern relevance to the 1970s rock opera.

Set for a three-night run from August 1–3, the production marks a return to the Bowl for the musical that first rocked its way onto the same stage in 1971. With direction and choreography by Tony winner Sergio Trujillo and musical direction from Stephen Oremus, this revival isn’t just theatrical nostalgia—it’s a bold reimagining that pulls the beloved show closer to its raw, rebellious roots.

For the L.A. Philharmonic, this staging continues a long-standing tradition of elevating Broadway classics through high-caliber, star-studded performances under the stars. “We’re especially thrilled to welcome Adam Lambert to the cast,” said LA Phil president and CEO Kim Noltemy.

“This fresh interpretation goes beyond tribute—it returns Jesus Christ Superstar to its original rock-and-roll DNA”

The chemistry between Lambert and Erivo is already setting the stage for a dramatic, unforgettable showdown between Judas and Jesus, made even more intriguing by the fashion-forward artistry each performer is known for. While the role of Mary Magdalene remains unannounced, anticipation is mounting fast as tickets go on sale May 6 at 10 a.m. PT.

In a summer full of concert options, Jesus Christ Superstar at the Bowl stands apart—not just for its star power, but for its unapologetic return to the grit, glamour, and revolution at the heart of the original musical.
