In May 2025, Chinese Ambassador to Austria, Qi Mei, actively enhanced bilateral relations between China and Austria through a series of diplomatic engagements and cultural events. These efforts underscored a mutual commitment to fostering long-term cooperation across political, economic, scientific, and cultural domains.
Ambassador Qi Mei met with Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker at the Federal Chancellery in Vienna to discuss the future development of Chinese-Austrian relations and assess the international situation. Both parties emphasized the importance of continuous diplomatic communication, especially amidst global geopolitical tensions. The discussions also highlighted the strategic significance of stable Europe-Asia relations, economic collaboration, and multilateral crisis management approaches.
Furthering educational and scientific collaboration, Ambassador Qi Mei held talks with Eva-Maria Holzleitner, Austria’s Federal Minister for Women, Science and Research. The meeting focused on promoting women’s roles in science and society, developing university partnerships, and jointly addressing global research and innovation challenges. Both sides expressed interest in structured exchanges, including bilateral research projects and joint educational programs.
Cultural exchange was also a focal point in May, exemplified by the Austrian preliminary round of the international “Chinese Bridge” language competition held at the University of Graz. Organized by the Confucius Institute Graz in cooperation with the Chinese Embassy, the event showcased Austrian students’ proficiency in Chinese language and culture. Ambassador Qi Mei attended the event, highlighting the unifying power of language and culture in fostering mutual understanding.
