Just days before kicking off their highly anticipated For The Dreams national tour, King Stingray has announced the departure of lead vocalist Yirrŋa Yunupiŋu. The band broke the news on March 19 via social media, confirming that Yirrŋa — who co-founded the band in 2020 — is stepping away from the group.
Taking his place is Ngalakan Wanambi, who fans may recognize from King Stingray’s recent U.S. tour. The band praised his performance and energy, noting that Wanambi is ready to take on the role full-time.
“Hey everyone, we’ve got some news to share – King Stingray and Yirrŋa have parted ways,” the band posted. “To keep the fire burning, we’re stoked to introduce the deadly Ngalakan Wanambi stepping up on vocals.”
Formed in Yirrkala, a remote community in Arnhem Land, King Stingray quickly gained national attention with their fusion of Yolŋu rock, surf rock, and alternative sounds. Yirrŋa, the nephew of the late Dr. M. Yunupiŋu of Yothu Yindi, co-founded the band alongside guitarist Roy Kellaway, the son of Yothu Yindi bassist Stuart Kellaway.

The band released their self-titled debut album in 2022 and followed up with For The Dreams in November 2024. Their unique sound and cultural influence have earned them critical acclaim, including an ARIA Award for Best Independent Release.
Despite the major lineup change, the band promises that the For The Dreams tour will carry the same vibrant energy and passion fans have come to love.
“This tour is gonna be something really special – same King Stingray spirit, same unstoppable Yolŋu rock and a whole lotta love,” they added.
The tour launches on March 21 at Sydney’s Hordern Pavilion, with stops in Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Fremantle. Beddy Rays and The Belair Lip Bombs will appear as special guests on select dates.
