If you’ve just binged all eight haunting episodes of We Were Liars on Amazon Prime, you’re probably still recovering from that gut-punch of a twist—and wondering if there’s more of the Sinclair family story to come. Spoiler alert: as of now, Season 2 hasn’t been officially confirmed, but the conversations are already happening behind the scenes. And the good news? The show’s creators aren’t ready to leave this eerie island world behind just yet.

Based on E. Lockhart’s bestselling YA novel, We Were Liars arrived on Prime Video with a visually lush, emotionally sharp adaptation that caught even longtime fans off guard. The series centers around Cadence Sinclair, played by Emily Alyn Lind, and her return to her family’s private island after a mysterious accident the summer before. The first season closely follows the book—right down to its heart-wrenching ghostly reveal. For now, it feels like a complete story. But if you think that’s the end, think again.

Showrunners Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie have been open about their hopes for a second season. In interviews with both The Wrap and Variety, they’ve said they’re in talks with Amazon and are optimistic that the streaming data will justify a return. “We love this world. We love our cast,” MacKenzie said.

“We’d love the opportunity to come back and do more”

If the second season moves forward, it won’t just be more of the same. It’s likely to pivot to a prequel story based on Lockhart’s companion novel Family of Liars. That book shifts the focus to a younger generation of Sinclairs—specifically, a 17-year-old Carrie Sinclair, years before the events of Cadence’s summer. According to the show’s creators, this prequel could bring back familiar faces (yes, including Johnny’s ghost) while exploring the darker legacy behind the island’s pristine façade.

There’s also a new sequel in the works: We Fell Apart: A We Were Liars Novel, set to be published this November. It won’t continue Cadence’s exact story, but it introduces a fresh character named Matilda, who’s lured to a crumbling coastal mansion by a father she barely knows. With themes of mystery, family secrets, and identity, it’s a natural fit for Prime’s atmospheric, slow-burn storytelling.

Right now, the fate of We Were Liars Season 2 is hanging in the balance. Viewership will determine whether the haunting tone and emotional unraveling of the Sinclairs gets a second life. So, if you haven’t already, stream the series, revisit Family of Liars, and pre-order We Fell Apart—because there’s clearly more story waiting beneath the surface. And if the stars align, we’ll be back on that island before long.
